What is a remote handset lifter?

A remote handset lifter, also known more simply as a “handset lifter” is a device that is commonly used with cordless or wireless DECT headsets. The primary purpose of the handset lifter is to allow users to answer and end phone calls remotely. Without the need to physically pick up the telephone hand piece or answer from the phone itself.

For example, if you are making a coffee and your phone rings, you will hear a ringer in your ear and you can press the answer button on your headset and the lifter will lift your phones hand piece up for you, directing the call straight to the headset.

How does the handset lifter work?

The remote handset lifter plugs directly into a DECT cordless headset. It is then stuck on the top of the desk phone just under where the hand piece sits. When the headset button is pressed, it sends a signal to the lifter which uses its cogs to turn and lift up, lift the hand piece receiver up off the hook allowing the call to come directly through to the headset

Installation: The handset lifter is first installed on the desk phone itself. It will need stick to the side of your phone just under where the hand piece sits so it can lift the top of the hand piece off the phones receiver key

Connection: The connection is simple; you need to plug the handset lifter in to your DECT headset base unit. Once this is plugged in correctly you should be able press the headset button and the lifter should start working.

Placement: To set up the handset lifter, you should put it in the right spot near the top of the phone, just below where the phone's part you hold (handpiece) rests. This way, it can lift the handpiece when needed.

Handset lifter or EHS Cable?

If you are confused or struggling to choose between having a lifter for your phone or get a EHS cable, then the answer is simple. Some models of phones do not take EHS cables, and some do but some EHS cables can be hard for suppliers to get hold of and they can usually be expensive. In this case it may be better to get a lifter because handset lifters will work on 95% of phones it just depends on how the phones are built. All in all, EHS cables are better than lifters in my opinion and they are newer. They practically do the same job, but an EHS cable does not have to physically lift the handpiece it does it all internally and electronically. There is less room for error and EHS cables are usually much more reliable and usually last longer.

Do you need a lifter for the headset to work?

The answer is no. A remote lifter is a optional extra to add on when buying a DECT headset on a desk phone. It is for remotely answering your phone away from your desk. Remember the lifter is a optional extra when buying a headset meaning it will still work without it but without it you will not be able to answer calls away from your desk. To answer calls, you would need to use the headset or speakerphone key on your desk phone.

Conclusion

In Conclusion, handset lifters are a good thing to have and are extremely useful however if your phone model can take a EHS cable then I would recommend the EHS cable. You will have less problems, they are easy to set up and they tend to last for longer periods of time. The lifter is basically a old version of the EHS cable so I will always tell people to go for a EHS cable if they can. If not then a lifter is an ideal method to fall back on that will still allow you to remotely answer and end calls away from your desk.
